Most of you probably never laid eyes upon the subject of this post, but for those of you that did, I call upon you to take a moment to shed a tear for the old training deck.
I originally built the 20'x33' deck in order to conduct classes upon, which served us very well in the early years of building the club. The deck survived a complete disassembly and relocation, any given weather conditions that Hampton Roads threw its way, and, of course, countless fumikomi impacts. The deck saw a great deal of sweat from us, and even a little blood from time to time... I always had meant to sand that thing...
This past weekend, my father and I started taking the deck down given the fact that it will no longer be used for its intended purpose, and out of a desire to reclaim a large part of the yard. Even though the deck has not felt a proper Kendo and Iaido class in quite some time, it was an important part of the early growth of our club, and despite its inanimate nature, I will always remember it with fondness.
